Beyond Technology: Urmila Menon on Building the Connected Enterprise

The newly appointed Chief Technology Officer at Front Light Building Company on three decades of technology leadership, the shift from technology delivery to business outcomes, and how AI could reshape construction and homebuilding.

With more than 30 years of experience across technology and business leadership, Urmila Menon has built her career across enterprise technology, AI-driven innovation, product management, digital transformation, cloud platforms, cybersecurity, data and analytics.

Her career began in software engineering before evolving into senior technology and executive leadership roles across multiple industries. She has worked at the intersection of technology and business, helping organisations navigate large-scale transformation and use technology to support strategic growth.

In this conversation with CXO Chronicle, she discusses the evolution of her leadership philosophy, the growing role of AI in construction and homebuilding, and her vision of a connected enterprise where technology, data, AI and people work together.

“Technology is ultimately about people.”

1. Looking back at your career journey, what experiences have shaped your approach to leadership the most?

My career began in software engineering, and over three decades I’ve had the opportunity to grow from a software engineer and problem solver into technology and executive leadership roles across multiple industries.

That journey taught me that while technology enables transformation, people make transformation successful.

My leadership approach is centred on listening, understanding the business, creating a clear vision, building strong teams, and empowering people to deliver meaningful outcomes.

2. What has been one of the most meaningful milestones or transitions in your professional journey so far?

One of the most meaningful transitions has been evolving from a technology leader into a business leader who leads through technology.

As my career progressed from software engineering into CIO and CTO roles, my focus shifted from delivering technology to delivering business outcomes—growth, operational efficiency, customer experience, and innovation.

Today, as CTO of Front Light Building Company, I have the opportunity to bring those experiences together to build a connected, scalable, secure, and future-ready technology ecosystem that supports the company’s growth.

3. How are technology and AI influencing your industry and the way organisations are approaching business today?

Technology has become an integral part of business strategy, and AI is accelerating that shift.

In construction and homebuilding, AI, automation, data, and connected platforms can transform everything from design and construction to operations and the customer experience.

The greatest opportunity is moving beyond standalone AI tools and embedding AI into business processes to improve productivity, decision-making, and customer experiences.

At the same time, organisations must balance innovation with strong governance, security, data protection, and responsible AI adoption.

4. What is one leadership lesson or perspective that has stayed with you throughout your career?

One principle has stayed with me throughout my career: technology is ultimately about people. You can have the best strategy and technology, but transformation succeeds only when people understand the vision and believe in it.

will continue to evolve rapidly, but building trust, developing people, and bringing teams together around a shared purpose will always be fundamental to leadership.

5. Looking ahead, what developments or trends in your industry are you watching most closely?

I’m particularly interested in the evolution of generative and agentic AI and how these technologies will move from individual productivity tools into intelligent enterprise workflows.

I’m also watching the convergence of AI, automation, data, analytics, digital twins, and connected construction platforms. Together, these capabilities can reshape how homes and communities are designed, built, sold, and supported.

Ultimately, I believe the biggest opportunity is creating a connected enterprise—where technology, data, AI, and people work together seamlessly to drive business value.

A Technology Leadership Perspective

Across Menon’s responses, the role of technology emerges as broader than simply implementing new systems or tools. Her career trajectory reflects a shift toward using technology as a means of addressing business outcomes, while her perspective on AI focuses on its integration into wider organisational workflows.

As AI, automation, analytics and connected platforms continue to develop, Menon sees the opportunity in bringing these capabilities together rather than treating them as isolated technologies. At the centre of that approach remains a consistent leadership principle: transformation is ultimately shaped by the people who understand, adopt and execute it.
